Source:
- Boron trichloride (BCL3) is produced by reacting together one of the following sets of ingredients.in each case the reaction requires elevated temperatures.
- Finely divided carbon plus boric acid and chlorine
Application:
- It is used as a chemical reagent in the pharmaceutical industry.
- It is used as a source of boron for p-type doping silicon by thermal diffusion or ion implantation. It is also used for dry plasma etching of aluminium and its alloys
- It is used as a carrier gas, as a catalyst in the organic reaction, for manufacturing of electrical resistors.
- It may be used in the production of optical fibre.
Characteristics:
- Liquefied gas, decompose in water to hydrogen chloride and boric acid forms white fumes in humid air pungent odour highly corrosive.
Health risk:
- Highly toxic, attack the eyes and mucous membranes, can cause lung damage.
